Bigger than most hiring managers admit. A landmark study by Bertrand and Mullainathan at the National Bureau of Economic Research sent identical resumes to employers. The only difference: some had white-sounding names, others had Black-sounding names. White-sounding names got 50% more callbacks. Same qualifications. Same experience. Different name.
That study was published in 2004. Has it improved? Not much. A 2021 replication by researchers at UC Berkeley and the University of Chicago found racial discrimination in callback rates remained virtually unchanged over two decades.
